I know Rita caused some major damage in Beaumont and Port Arthur and I don’t mean to minimize that at all. However, Rita was pretty much a dud for us.
We went from being asked to have a 3 day supply of drinking water and a 5 day supply of food, to we’re going to get a lot of rain and wind to we have a 40% chance of rain to “we’re not getting any rain.” The only thing that was different today is that there were occasional gusts of wind (5 to 10 mph) that made you think it might be fall. However, the temperature reminds you it’s still summer in Texas.
As a matter of fact, the forecast for tomorrow looks like triple digits again (101).
So Austin was spared, I guess. Houston was also spared. My sister and her husband came up on Friday. Because they waited a little longer, they didn’t experience the 24 hour trip to Austin that other travelers were experiencing. Likewise, they left early today and got back to Houston within about 3 hours. Their house didn’t experience any damage (save for a banana tree that didn’t quite make it).
I’m still not looking forward to another 2 months of hurricane season, but I’m hoping we’ve seen the worst of it.
