Happy Birthday John Cleese

October 27th, 2006 by Mike · No Comments

John Cleese as Basil FawltyAccording to his Wikipedia entry, John Cleese turns 67 today.

A lot of people know him from his Monty Python days (both the British TV series and numerous movies) or when he did A Fish Called Wanda. They’re all good, but my dad and I laughed ourselves silly when we watched him as Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers.

Cleese plays an uptight snobby hotel owner that was apparently based on a real experience Cleese had while traveling with the Monty Python crew.

It’s a little dated now, but still very funny.

I’ve got the DVD set of all 12 episodes. Unfortunately he quit even though the series was very popular in the UK.

Oh I still love the Dead Parrot Sketch, the Cheese Shop Sketch and the Argument Clinic as well as other Monty Python classics.  But seeing Cleese (as Fawlty) try to deal with German visitors after suffering a concussion is hilarious.
