Texas vs. Texas A&M 2007 Edition - Liveblogging

November 23rd, 2007 by Mike · No Comments

LonghornEven though this game isn’t as big a rivalry as Texas vs. OU, it still is a classic. I’m sitting in front of my TV with the laptop hoping to see something better than last year. My rabid Aggie brother-in-law is watching too. He said I should have some tissues ready for all the crying. We’ll see. :)

First observation - No High Definition. Ugh. First disappointment.

1st Quarter

  • Aggies first drive - a very impressive touchdown by the Aggies. A&M 7 - UT 0
  • Longhorns first drive - A punt. Nice.
  • Whoa - Now we have HD. Things are looking up!
  • UT forces a 3 and out! Woo-hoo!
  • Jamal makes a big run…it looks like the Texas Offensive Coordinator is trying to wear them down.
  • A pooch kick…how novel.
  • ABC is showing a slow crawl through the streets of College Station while they flash the logos of advertisers. I’ve been to College Station a few times…I think they covered everything interesting in town. I guess they didn’t show the mall. :)
  • A&M is on the march again…and we cut to commercial. Oh look. It’s the Dr. Pepper commercial with the dancing lineman while drinking Dr. Pepper. It was funny the first 84 times I saw it. It’s just tired now.
  • Longhorn injury…it looks like he’ll be OK. The camera flashes to the crowd and I see several Aggie hand gestures (thumbs up) and only a few anti-Longhorn gestures (horns down). I’ll give them some credit for that. So many other schools (without their own hand gestures) love to do the horns down thing.
  • Aggies get the field goal. A&M 10 - UT 0 …I guess that’s enough of a lead for Texas to wake up and start scoring. I’ve honestly been disappointed how the Longhorns seem to prefer coming from behind instead of scoring 2 or 3 touchdowns right away. I’m thankful for the wins, but it (obviously) has drawbacks.
  • Ah…the vaunted Corps of Cadets are doing the horns down gesture…classy!
  • End of the first quarter. I wonder if this is as boring for Scott as it is for me. I guess if your team is ahead, it’s more exciting.

2nd Quarter

  • Well, let’s see if Texas can do anything with this possession. While we’re waiting through all the Christmas commercials, maybe I’ll give a quick update on our Thanksgiving. In a word…awesome. We had mom’s signature turkey and dressing with plenty of other food. The kids had a blast…the adults took naps. :)
  • You know, when you watch a football game (and your football team is in it), you want to feel good. I’m waiting for the good feelings.
  • A&M gets a holding penalty…then a time out. Today is “Black Friday” - the day where retailers try desperately to get you out and buy their cheap stuff. I decided to sit this out. Susan went to the Outlet Malls at midnight (yes, they opened at midnight and it was a mob scene), but I didn’t see anything that did it for me.
  • Interception!!!! Woo-hoo!!! There’s a little good feeling.
  • Well, that fizzled out…I’m always amazed how loud it is at Kyle Field. You can really hear it over the TV.
  • What’s this? LSU is losing to Arkansas 14-6? Cool! As much as I dislike Arkansas, I’m for anything that really fouls up the BCS.
  • A&M is doing a masterful job of keeping the Texas defense on the field (and the Texas offense off the field). Even though the Aggies are passing more than they have this season, they’re still running ball control offense. Well done.
  • Fake field goal…going for the jugular. A&M 17 - UT 0
  • Monster screen pass to Jamal…where has this been?? I guess the offense is well rested.
  • WHAT??? Fake field goal??? Coach Fran calls a time out to keep A&M from getting the ball. Crazy!
  • Well, a field goal is better than turning it over on downs with no points. A&M 17 - UT 3
  • HALFTIME. What a disappointment for me and (I’m sure) a great morale booster for my brother-in-law. I’ve got to restart the laptop to apply Vista updates. See you in the 2nd half…maybe.

3rd Quarter

  • You know, hope springs eternal when you know your team will get the opening kickoff. Then your quarterback throws an interception. Sigh…and now a personal foul! Things can only get better.
  • I’m due to go get Kayla at 5:30, then go to Ken and Marilyn’s for Thankgiving dinner (on Friday). I’ll still be watching (and listening to) the game. I just might not get to blog as much. I’ll definitely write a wrap up (for good or ill) tonight.
  • Alright! Finally a break goes our way. Interception Longhorns!
  • Jamal scores!!!! A&M 17 - UT 10
  • Erik is getting into the spirit. He’s throwing his little football to me in between plays. He throws pretty hard for a 3 year old. He’ll still be a lineman!
  • The Aggie offense is grinding it out again. Maybe we can hold them to a field goal.
  • Going for it on 4th…not enough. Texas ball!!!!
  • The announcer just said that A&M has had 62 plays to Texas with 32. Wow. No wonder this has been painful.
  • Speaking of painful…fumble Texas. Ugh.
  • Gotta sign off until later. I’ll be rooting for Texas…at least they’re only 7 down.

Summary

Well, for the 2nd straight year the Longhorns lose to (at least according to record), a team they should have beat.  My hats off to the students and alumni of that quaint little trade school on the Brazos.  The best team won tonight.
