Greetings from the Guentzel Family. We’ve endured a busy holiday weekend and I’m only now getting around to writing anything about it. We’re certainly glad we had today to recuperate.
The biggest event of the weekend was a fun trip to San Antonio to check out a new exhibit at the zoo. For several months, the San Antonio Zoo has been working on a new exhibit called Africa Live. It’s a multi-phase project to provide a modern way to show off the animals that have some basis in Africa. As Zoo “members”, we got an exclusive sneak peek invite for this Saturday.
Before we could get into the city limits, the kids were clamoring for food, so we decided to eat at Mi Tierra downtown.
For those who haven’t been, Mi Tierra is a classic Tex Mex restaurant that I’ve been going to since my childhood. Is it authentic interior Mexican food? No. It’s Tex Mex. Cheesy and a little bit spicy. The place is an experience even if you don’t eat there. They stay decorated for Christmas year round with some great art. We sat underneath a nine foot painting of Selena and I had a plate of Chicken Green Enchiladas…just wonderful.
When we finally made it to the zoo, we were treated to Lance-Armstrong-esque Africa Live wristbands. These were our tickets into the exhibit. We became members in 2007 because we determined that we would quickly break even on the cost of admission if we took our family just twice a year. We’ve been three times in the span of a year and I’m sure we’ll probably make it four soon. Aside from the long drive (for little kids), it’s cheap, quality entertainment that usually gives everyone some good exercise.
The Africa Live exhibit was pretty impressive even it was a phase one. The hippo didn’t seem to sure about getting into the water…he/she stood on dry land for the entire time we were there.
I went ahead and uploaded a few of the better pictures to a photo gallery for your entertainment (just think of it as an old-fashioned slide show that you can breeze through at your own pace at your computer).
