I just got in from seeing one of my favorite bands from youth. I had the pleasure of seeing Rush. My good friend Lance called me last week and asked me if I wanted to go to the Rush concert. I knew they were coming to town (I caught an ad on the radio), but it was unlikely I would get to go. As it turned out, Lance had won a pair of tickets from the radio station.
The guys were definitely older, but they were surprisingly tight. In addition to playing tracks from their latest album (Snakes and Arrows), they unpacked the songs that would please any fan.
Of course, they played “Tom Sawyer” (that was introduced by the South Park kids, BTW). I say “of course” because it will be a travesty NOT to play it. It’s one of their biggest hits. It would be like The Kinks not playing “Lola” or the Police not playing “Roxanne“.
I worked with a great guy at the Attorney General’s office (named Tom) that put it best. He said if he was going to a Cheap Trick concert, he wouldn’t mind if they wanted to play any of their new songs regardless of how mediocre they may be. However, if they didn’t play “Dream Police“, he would ask for his money back.
I’m going to sleep now.
Thanks to Lance for letting me relive my youth for awhile. I forgot how cool concerts can be.
